Rangitikei declared Tb-free

Another part of New Zealand has been declared Tb-free as a result of the Animal Board's Board's eradication programme.

It says intensive possum control operations have cleared bovine tuberculosis from wildlife in more than 32,000 hectares of the coastal Rangitikei region on the North Island's west coast from Bulls to Turakina.

The board will continue to monitor wildlife populations through surveys and animal inspections to ensure the area stays free of the disease.

Possums are responsible for about 70% of new cattle and deer herd infections in risk areas.
