Forest sector eyes new products

6:35 am on 11 July 2012

The forest industry is investigating what options the sector has for branching out into new products and technology.

Woodco, an umbrella body for the sector, has a strategy to more than double export revenue to $12 billion in 10 years. It's taking an approach used in a Canadian project called Biopathways.

Forest Owners Association chief executive David Rhodes says the aim is to boost wood processing in New Zealand.

There will be a focus on bioenergy and technology, but it won't be restricted to that.

"It could be a new type of laminate product ... or it could be biofuel add-on," says Mr Rhodes.

"There's a whole raft of different potential options out there: we're trying narrow it down a bit"

"We're hoping we will pique people's interest in what's out there".
