International perspective at farm succession summit

7:57 am on 13 July 2012

An international perspective on the need for farm succession planning is the focus of a summit at Massey University.

The summit is being hosted by the university's Centre of Excellence in Farm Business Management on its Palmerston North campus.

Tom Phillips from the centre says with the value and size of farms increasing and the complex dynamics of families, succession is becoming a real issue.

He says most of the audience are rural professionals who are working directly in farm succession.

But Mr Phillips says some farmers and representatives from groups like the New Zealand Dairy Womens' Network are also attending.

"The idea is that this group will then be able to talk to not only their clients, but to other people within their own professions, and that we can start building an awareness of how this issue might be resolved".

Mr Phillipssays the summit will hear from speakers from the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
