Farmers in Waikato are still advised to keep stock off low-lying paddocks as rivers remain swollen.
Waikato Regional Council says a close eye is being kept on the Piako River as peak levels move through the river system.
It says there's potential for emergency ponding zones in paddocks near the river to receive water over the next 48 hours.
The council says this is an important part of the Piako flood management scheme, which takes pressure off land beside the lower Piako River.
The Ohinemuri and Waihou Rivers are expected to fall steadily over the next few days.
The lower Waikato River will remain swollen for the rest of the week, especially around Mercer.
