650 tonnes of plastic farm waste recycled in past year

A voluntary scheme to recycle plastic farm waste has ended its first year with more than 650 tonnes being collected.

The government funded product stewardship scheme has seen about 1000 recycling bins supplied to farms for waste material such as bale and silage wrap and agrichemical containers.

The programme received $130,000 from the Waste Minimisation Fund.

Environment Minister Amy Adams says thanks to the commitment from the agricultural sector, the plastic waste collected saved it being burned or buried, which wasn't a sustainable solution.
