Farming companies fined for earthworks

Two Waikato farming companies have been fined $60,000 for illegal earthworks.

Tui Glen Farm and Walling Family Farms admitted seven charges that brought under the Resource Management Act by Waikato Regional Council.

The two companies which have the same directors, carried out the earthworks without consents on farms at Otorohanga and Maungatautiri.

Judge Melanie Harland, who heard the case in Hamilton District Court, criticised the farmers for their cavalier attitude to sediment and erosion control.

She says as people involved in earthmoving contracting, they were aware of the resource consent process and had previously received infringement notices for similar offending.
