Technology not wanted by anti-GE group

6:35 am on 4 September 2012

GE Free New Zealand rejects the argument that the world needs that technology to feed the growing population.

Spokesperson Jon Carapiet says that contrary to the claims of GE proponents, the current generation of genetically modified crops are producing reduced yields and require increased pesticide use, making them a threat to food security, not a solution.

He says there are other ways of increasing food production which have nothing to do with GE.

Mr Carapiet also says New Zealand also needs to re-establish the Bioethics Council, disbanded by the Government more than three years ago, to provide guidance on GE technologies in this country.
