Farm nutrient tracking programme upgrade

2:09 pm on 6 September 2012

Farmers and growers have been handed a newly upgraded version of the main tool available for managing fertiliser and other nutrients on their properties.

Overseer is a computer software programme that estimates nutrient movements in a farming or horticultural operation, including losses to water and air.

The new features include the ability to produce a life-cycle assessment of greenhouse gas emissions.

AgResearch scientist Mark Shepherd, who heads the Overseer development team, says the programme is mostly used on dairy farms, but can also be used on sheep and beef farms and is being reviewed see how it could be adapted for cropping farms.
