Department of Labour officials are about to start their spring quad bike safety campaign.
Last year, quad bike crashes were the leading cause of the 15 deaths on New Zealand farms.
Labour Department central division general manager Ona de Rooysays the campaign to track down unsafe behaviour by farmers and their employees is taking a different tack from those held previously.
"This year we're taking the approach of having a reasonably-sustained focus on farm visits and being out doing quad assessments," she says.
"Five people die, and 850 are injured every year in accidents on farms involving quad bikes."
