Seafood firms scale down industry body

The seafood industry has reorganised itself, with a new, scaled-down national body.

Seafood New Zealand has evolved from an in-depth review to replace the New Zealand Seafood Industry Council.

Outgoing Seafood Council chair Dave Sharp says the new structure gives more muscle to the bodies representing the different sectors - that's aquaculture, paua, rock lobster and deepwater and inshore fin-fishing .

"We need to have stronger sector groups," he says.

"We want the central body to be a truly generic body and to have a whole-of-industry approach.

"In the past, there has been some duplication of costs"

Mr Sharp says a new seafood strategy company has also been formed.
