Carter wants more funds for rural research

Primary Industries Minister David Carter says he will push for more funding for the Government's Primary Growth Partnership research programme if it reaches its limit.

The programme was launched three years ago to provide joint research funding to boost economic growth in the primary, forestry and food sectors.

So far nearly $600 million of funding has been spread over a number of years.

There are eight research programmes already running, four more have been announced and others are being assessed.

The eighth application round closed earlier this month and the Ministry for Primary Industries has signalled that it may be the last for some time.

Mr Carter said that's because it's getting near the limit of what's been allocated in the budget.

''This has been an outstanding investment,'' he said.
