Onion growers face more tears

Onion New Zealand says growers and exporters in for another challenging year.

Exports during the past year fell to a value of $65 million, compared with $80 million the previous year.

Onion NZ chairman Michael Ahern said the high value of the New Zealand dollar, increased shipping rates and compliance costs combined with the buying power of overseas supermarkets has reduced incomes and profit margins.

He does not expect much improvement for growers in the near future.
