A beast from Little River took the prize for the heaviest steer at this week's prime cattle competition held at Canterbury Agricultural Park.

Ben Manson's steer weighed 1050kg, easily beating last year's winner. He was sold for $1890.

The second and third place-getters also weighed well over a tonne.

The competition was held at the last sale before the 150th Canterbury A & P Show which opens on Wednesday next week.

It is the largest A&P Show in the country attracting 100,000 visitors, almost 7000 livestock plus competitions and 600 trade exhibitors.
