Testing of GE animal feed wanted

Updated at 9:11 am on 21 November 2012

The Green Party wants genetically-engineered animal feed to be tested and labelled, saying more of it is making its way into the human food chain than ever before.

The party says farmers are importing genetically engineered feedstuffs like soybean meal, maize meal and palm kernel meal to feed dairy cattle, without any testing or labelling.

Without these, it says New Zealand's image as a producer of safe quality foods will be tarnished.

Federated Farmers says there is no scientific proof that genetically engineered animal feed is harmful to humans.
