Meat industry group supports call for strategy

Meat and Wool New Zealand is supporting the call for a meat industry strategy to make it profitable and sustainable.

The idea comes from Federated Farmers' meat and fibre chair Bruce Wills, who says the red meat sector should follow the dairy industry's lead in developing a comprehensive plan for its future.

He says a meat industry task force was heading down that path until it was canned after the collapse of merger talks last year.

Bruce Wills says Meat and Wool New Zealand would be best placed to bring farmers and meat companies together for some strategic thinking.

Meat and Wool chief executive Scott Champion says his organisation has also been thinking along those lines and has raised the idea at farmer consultation meetings.
