The kiwifruit industry believes the PSA vine disease incursion which is killing kiwifruit vines, may soon be officially declared an adverse event.
An official Government declaration would give orchardists increased support to help them manage the impacts of PSA.
New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers president Neil Trebilco said the industry is hoping for an announcement soon.
A declaration would allow growers to apply for a range of support measures such as financial and or social assistance.
Those measures typically include: emergency unemployment benefits, more flexible tax requirements, psychosocial services and recovery co-ordinators.
The office of Primary Industries Minister David Carter said an announcement is expected soon.
