A Manawatu meat processor and dairy farm owner has been fined more than $180,000 for breaching wastewater and effluent regulations under the Resource Management Act.

Ken Thurston was convicted on five charges relating to discharging wastewater from Mainland Meats at Longburn into the Manawatu River, as well as three charges of illegally discharging dairy shed effluent onto land.

The prosecution was brought by Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council, which says the offending was completely intentional and showed a blatant disregard for the environment.
