New beef plant at Te Aroha opened

Updated at 6:48 am on 7 December 2012

Silver Fern Farms' new beef processing plant at Te Aroha in eastern Waikato is heading for full production after its official opening by the Prime Minister on Thursday.

The $67 million facility has been rebuilt on the site of a plant that was badly damaged by fire two years ago.

It incorporates the latest meat processing technology, including sophisticated traceability and yield collection systems.

Chief executive Keith Cooper said that at full capacity, it will have up to 380 employees processing 125,000 cattle per year, with the ability to increase that.
