The Environmental Protection Authority has approved the use of a group of herbicides to control aquatic pest plants.

The Environmental Protection Authority has approved the use of a group of herbicides to control aquatic pest plants.

The herbicides are already used on land to control a range of pest plants.

Regional councils, the Department of Conservation, Ministry for Primary Industries, Land Information New Zealand and Mighty River Power applied to the authority to be allowed to use them on water weeds as well.

The EPA has agreed, but with some extra controls.

They include making sure the herbicides are not applied to water used for irrigating crops, or in waterways where whitebait or young eels may be present during the whitebait season.
