ANZCO Foods has started an energy saving programme at its plants which it expects will cut costs by more than $2 million per year.

The meat processing and export company launched the programme with the backing of the Energy Efficiency and Cobnservation Authority, which is providing up to $450,000 in support funding.

Chief executive Mark Clarkson said ANZCO had already identified some energy saving measures in an audit done with EECA's help.

Mr Clarkson said the 10 plants in the project use a combination of electricity, coal and gas and ANZCO is looking at annual savings of almost $2.5 million after two years.
