Extreme fire risk in Hastings

7:42 am on 9 January 2013

Hastings District Council says the fire risk has been lifted to extreme for Wednesday and Thursday with weather forecasts predicting high temperatures and strong winds for the region.

Hastings, Napier and Central Hawke's Bay are three of seven areas in New Zealand which have fire bans.

Hastings principal rural fire officer Trevor Mitchell said the forecast for these two days is for strong winds and temperatures near 30 degrees, ideal conditions for fires.

He said even a spark from a lawn mower can be enough to start a serious fire and anyone who sees smoke or a fire should call the Fire Service immediately.
