Age bans on quad bikes mooted

9:52 am on 17 January 2013

Federated Farmers says New Zealand needs to look at age restrictions for the use of quad bikes after a spate of injuries to people using the vehicles.

Seven people died in quad bike accidents last year and a series of injuries and one death since Christmas have prompted the federation to call for extra caution.

On average, two children are killed and nearly 30 others are admitted to hospital each year due to quad bike related injuries.

The Australian federal government is looking at banning people under 16 years old from using adult quad bikes.

Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety director Tony Lower said quad bikes and children are a fatal mix.

Federated Farmers chief executive Conor English said age bans should be looked at in New Zealand too.
