The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee is seeking public feedback on a new code of welfare for horses.

The draft code sets out minimum standards and best practice guidelines for horses and ponies, as well as donkeys and equine crossbreds.

The committee says more than 50,000 horses in New Zealand are kept as pets and for breeding, sport, entertainment, and as working animals.

The proposed minimum standards cover areas such as animal handling; food and water; shelter and housing, health and disease.
