The Agriculture Rural Recycling programme is on track for another record year.
The programme is administered by the Agrecovery Foundation, a non-profit charitable trust, with trustees representing Federated Farmers, Fonterra, Horticulture New Zealand and Agcarm.
Marketing manager Duncan Scotland said 157 tonnes of plastic containers were collected from farms all over the country in the year ending June 2012, and sent for recycling both in New Zealand and overseas.
In addition, farmers delivered a substantial quantity of silage wrap to one of about 70 collection sites.
He says at this stage there's every chance that tonnage will be exceeded this year.
Mr Scotland says the greatest support for the recycling programme is coming from farmers in Canterbury and Waikato, who have recycled 87 tonnes of waste plastic materials in total.
He says many of the collection days have been so popular that farmers utes have been queued up at the collection sites waiting for the gates to open.
