Dry conditions continue

6:51 am on 17 February 2013

Dargaville, Warkworth and Wellsford have had virtually no rain since Christmas and milk production is really suffering.

Country Life reports it's 18% behind on a monthly basis and most farmers are responding by feeding out palm kernel.

Waikato is starting to look like a desert. Cows are losing condition.

Water systems are under pressure: cows at this time of year can drink 70 litres per day and even more if it's really hot.

Production is dropping significantly and many herds are moving to once per day. Empty cows are being culled.

Hawke's Bay is also still dry as a bone. Country Life says some areas in Wairarapa are also looking a bit grim.
