Farm accidents still high despite safety campaigns

Department of Labour figures show the number of deaths and accidents on farms has remained high despite two years of workplace health and safety campaigns.

Provisional figures released by the department show that of the 48 deaths it investigated since the beginning of last winter, 11 were in the agriculture sector.

Summer and autumn are the deadliest months.

Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson says research shows off-road vehicles such as ATVs and tractors are still a leading cause of death on farms.

Ms Wilkinson says farmers need to be more aware of the dangers and the things they can do to keep themselves safe.
