Farmers prepare petition over export subsidies

6:43 am on 11 June 2009

Farmers visiting the National Agricultural Fieldays are being asked to sign an open letter to the United States and the European Union calling for an end to dairy export subsidies.

The US and EU resurrected the much criticised subsidies after farmers there voiced concern over the pressure the global economic downturn has put on dairy prices.

Federated Farmers has penned the open letter to US President Barack Obama and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Its dairy section chair Lachlan McKenzie says there has been a strong response from farmers.

He says Federated Farmers wants to raise awareness of the issue among Americans and hopes to get the petition into newspapers in the United States.
