Tomatoes loving the heat

Tomato growers in Hawke's Bay say conditions have been perfect this summer.

Wattie's grows more than 400 hectares of tomatoes there and it says the hot, dry summer has produced an excellent yield and superb fruit quality.

Wattie's agriculture manager Ivan Angland said the weather's been fantastic and irrigation has had a big role to play.

"We're very lucky in regards to our grower base - they've got quite established irrigation set-ups these days," he says. "And we're using science behind our irrigation applications".

Mr Angland said other fruit and vegetable crops have also benefited from the consistently warm weather.
