International backing for anti-subsidy stand - Fed Farmers

2:49 pm on 12 June 2009

Federated Farmers says its had strong international support for its criticism of United States and European Union moves to resurrect dairy export subsidies.

The Federation's president Don Nicholson and vice-president Frank Brenmuhl attended talks with farm leaders at the Cairns Group meeting in Indonesia this week.

Mr Nicholson says the farm leaders were highly critical of spreading trade restrictions.

He says Cairns Group officials told him that 66% of US farmers agree with removal of subsidies, so he is optimistic that the US administration will end the measures before too long.

Mr Nicolson says since the world economy went into recession last year, 17 of the G20 countries have imposed some form of protectionism.

Federated Farmers has been collecting signatures at the Agricultural Fieldays to support an open letter to the US and EU presidents, condemning the subsidy moves. An opinion piece by Mr Nicholson was also published in the Wall Street Journal.
