Waikato Regional Council plans to expand its pest control programme to target stoats and rats as well as possums.
A report on the proposed changes comes at the end of a five year pest control programme by the Animal Health Board to fight bovine tuberculosis.
The council is looking at new cost-efficient strategies, giving it more control over a larger area with a focus on multiple species, not just possums.
The proposals go to public consultation at the end of the month.
