Drought-struck Wairarapa farmers also turn to Govt

Wairarapa farmers meeting in Masterton have voted to ask the Government to declare a state of drought in the region.

The Wellington Regional Council has told the sector that rainfall in Wairarapa over the past six months has been about 60% of the average level.

Federated Farmers says it's impossible to find space for grazing anywhere in the North Island, and some farmers are being forced to sell capital stock.

Almost all of the North Island's main farming regions are expected to be in a state of drought by the end of this week.
