Forest growers vote in favour of industry levy

2:50 pm on 12 April 2013

Forest growers have voted in favour of a compulsory industry levy to fund research programmes and promotional activities.

More than 85% of the 580 forest growers who voted supported the levy.

The Forest Growers Levy Trust believes only about 15% of eligible forest growers voted.

Trust chair Geoff Thompson says up to $6.5 million a year could be raised through the levy and other contributions to fund industry work, mostly for research on forest health, safety issues, harvesting systems and genetics.

Mr Thompson will take the results to Associate Primary Industries Minister Jo Goodhew and says he hopes the Government might introduce an official levy by the end of the year.
