A project investigating the economic and environmental impacts of intensive farming in central Hawke's Bay will be launched later this year.

The Foundation for Arable Research and Hawke's Bay Regional Council project, Tukituki Choices for Arable Farmers, has received a grant in the latest funding round of the government's Sustainable Farming Fund.

The project manager Diana Mathers said it aimed to provide farmers, many of whom currently run sheep and beef operations in the area, with information about irrigation opportunities related to the area's proposed Ruataniwha water storage scheme.

Ms Mathers said the project was also about getting more information to farmers.

She said the project had several sponsors and would receive $300,000 in funding over three years.
