North Island farmers to discuss meat industry reform

7:08 am on 26 April 2013

North Island supporters of a new farmer campaign to restructure the meat industry are expecting a big turnout at their first meeting in Feilding on Friday.

The Meat Industry Excellence Group is seeking farmer backing for its push to have 80% of meat processing and marketing channelled through a single co-ordinated structure.

About 1000 farmers voiced their support in Gore at a meeting to launch the campaign in March, while 600 attended the following meeting in Christchurch.

A North Island spokesperson for the group, John McCarthy, said indications are for a strong farmer showing at Feilding also.

The meeting at the Civic Hall is scheduled for 2pm, following the weekly stock sale.

Mr McCarthy said a further meeting is likely to be held in the Gisborne area, after which it will be decided whether there is a mandate to go to the next stage.
