Farmers warned about over-estimating pasture recovery

Federated Farmers will pull the plug soon on shipping emergency feed from the South Island for drought afflicted North Island farms unless demand picks up.

Once scheduled deliveries are completed in May, it will have sent about 220,000 small bale equivalents north with help of shipping companies.

Grain and seed representative David Clark said the demand for the supply of rye grass straw is slowing and it is hard to understand why.

Mr Clark said Federated Farmers is concerned that some North Island farmers may be over-estimating pasture recovery following recent rain and under-estimating their feed needs for winter.
