AgResearch to appeal High Court decision on GM research

6:24 am on 30 June 2009

AgResearch is to appeal a High Court decision that stopped a plan to expand research into genetically modified animals.

The Crown research institute applied to the Environmental Risk Management Authority last year, to continue and expand its research into cows that have been genetically modified to include human proteins in their milk.

It also wanted to broaden the research to include other animals.

But the GE Free organisation challenged the application in the High Court, where a judge ordered a halt to the application and ERMA's assessment process.

The judgement also stated that the authority erred in law by agreeing to receive the application in the first place.

But AgResearch believes ERMA was within its legal rights to do so and will appeal the decision.

No date has been set for the appeal.
