Young Farmer contest practical sessions

6:34 am on 17 May 2013

Aucklanders will get the chance to see how the country's top young farmers perform in the field on Friday.

The seven regional winners in the grand final of the Young Farmer contest are competing in the practical challenges at Kumeu showgrounds.

Chief executive Richard Fitzgerald said it will be a huge day with other events running as well.

A new edition this year is a concept called Food and You which is essentially a careers experience day for urban secondary school students.

Mr Fitzgerald said about 600 students from the wider Auckland area will be attending the day which will comprise different industry organisations with displays showing roles and opportunities in technology.

"It's quite a strategic move for young farmers to actually try and position agriculture and the agricultural industry in front of young people so they can learn more about where their food comes from and learn more about where their careers could take them if they're interested in the food value chain."

The Young Farmer contest ends on Saturday night with the grand final quiz.
