Meat exporters anxious to resume shipments to China

The meat industry is hoping that a documentation issue that's blocked meat shipments into China will be sorted out by early this week.

Chinese customs officials have been refusing to clear deliveries of New Zealand meat because of apparent confusion over the name change of the New Zealand regulating authority shown on the documents.

The former Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is now the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

MPI and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade have been working around the clock to provide the information needed to clear the shipments.

Meat Industry Association chief executive Tim Ritchie says meat exporters are anxious to hear that their products are moving through the pipeline again.

He says it will be a very expensive exercise if it is not fixed quickly.
