The bee industry wants an accurate assessment of the health of the country's honey bee population.
It's planning a survey of bee keepers later this year, with the Ministry for Primary Industries.
National Beekeepers Association president Barry Foster says there's a lot of anecdotal evidence about the impact that the varroa parasite and other pests and diseases have had on bee numbers.
He says there have also been reports of some high bee losses in winter.
