Great Irrigation Challenge in Ashburton

8:06 am on 23 May 2013

Organisers expect better water management to flow out of the Great Irrigation Challenge in Ashburton.

Almost 200 irrigators, irrigation scheme representatives and industry advisors have signed up for the series of practical workshops.

Irrigation New Zealand chief executive Andrew Curtis says it will continue the process of moving the industry from the No 8 wire approach of the past, to making the most of increasingly sophisticated technology.

He says the industry's professionalism is increasing and it's about meeting responsibilities relating to community expectations, water use efficiency and nutrient management.

Mr Curtis says it's about using the right amount of water and ensuring equipment is performing as it should.
