Supreme Court verdict awaited on appeal by pig industry

Pig farmers will be waiting to hear whether NZ Pork has been successful in a decision by the Ministry for Primary Industries to allow uncooked pork from countries with a devastating pig disease into New Zealand.

The Supreme Court heard an appeal by the Pork Industry on Wednesday and a decision is expected within a month.

NZ Pork chairman Ian Carter says pig farmers are struggling to come to terms with the fact the Government's willing to sacrifice their industry and livelihoods for the sake of trade.

He says all New Zealand pig farmers want is for the pork meat from abroad to be cooked to kill disease before it enters the country.
