South Canterbury farmer Tim O'Sullivan has won the 2009 Young Farmer of the Year title.

He beat seven other young farmers from around the country in three days of competition in Palmerston North.

The title has been passed back to a South Islander after being won by North Islanders for the past two years.

Mr O'Sullivan, 29, from Pleasant Point in South Canterbury, runs a 120-hectare dairy support block and has a business specialising in effluent pond liners and irrigation consultancy.

Second place winner was Richard Copland, a rural finance manager from Gore, and third place was awarded to Chris Will of Rongotea.
