New Zealand's most successful shearer is one step closer to his six hundredth win in open class competitions.

David Fagan, 47, from Te Kuiti, who first won the Golden Shears crown at Masterton in 1986, has taken out the Glenarm Championship in Northern Ireland.

The win came at the expense of nephew James Fagan, who is part of a New Zealand shearing team taking part in a seven-test series in the United Kingdom.

David Fagan's victory takes his total of wins in Britain to 139 and his career open titles to 591, the first of which he won in Balclutha in 1983.
