Meat exporters to be asked to pay more in marketing

Meat & Wool New Zealand is to ask meat exporters to increase their contributions to its marketing programmes.

Farmers have raised concerns about how much of their levy money is being spent in this area.

Exporters currently pay $2 million per year towards joint meat promotion campaigns, compared with the $11 million that Meat & Wool spends on marketing.

Chair Mike Petersen says farmers are not prepared to continue contributing 80% of the marketing costs.

He says it is hoped companies will fund at least half of the programme, in five years. If this does not happen, Meat & Wool will reduce its spending in that area.
