The organisation that advises the Government on animal welfare issues considers it's time to overhaul the law in that area.

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee's chair, Dr Peter O'Hara, says the Animal Welfare Act is nearly 10 years old, and a number of areas need a policy review and perhaps some amendments.

They include whether wild animals should have some protection under welfare legislation, and whether trained lay people should be allowed to carry out certain surgical procedures.
