Grower seminars held in response to pressure

6:38 am on 26 August 2009

Kiwifruit Growers Inc is running closed seminars to explain the benefits of the industry's single-desk marketing system, in response to a campaign to end Zespri's export dominance.

Turners & Growers is sending a letter to all kiwifruit growers this week outlining why it's asked the Government to abolish the system that allows Zespri to control exports.

The company accuses Zespri of abusing its power and breaking the rules under which it operates.

It's also begun court proceedings to challenge the legality of the kiwifruit export regulations.

Kiwifruit Growers Inc president Peter Ombler says it's a good opportunity to remind growers why the single desk marketing system works so well.

He says more than 300 growers have attended the seminars to date. Others are planned for the Gisborne and Opotiki areas.
