A Manawatu dairy farmer has been fined $26,000 for failing to supply a helmet to an employee who was seriously hurt on in an accident on the quad bike he was required to use.
Trevor Schroder was also ordered by the Palmerston North District Court to pay reparation of $20,000 to farm worker John Haar.
In November last year, Mr Haar suffered serious head injuries when he hit a wire that was being used to direct cows to where they could graze.
The Department of Labour took Schroder to court after the accident. Chief adviser for health and safety Geraint Emrys says the fine reflects the lack of practical steps taken to protect the victim.
Mr Emrys says the department is pursuing several other cases involving farm accidents on all-terrain vehicles.
