A stronger New Zealand dollar has pushed back prices for most wools at this week's Napier sale, compared with the previous North Island auction.

However prices for some types rose as limited supply outweighed the effect of the strengthening currency.

New Zealand Wool Services International reports that longer fine cross bred shears fetched up to 2.5% less while shorter lengths gained up to 5%.

Prices for most coarse carpet-type full fleece wools also increased, with shears up to 4% stronger.

Only two thirds of the 12,000 bales on offer were sold, which Wool Services says was because some growers held back wool from sale on the day, due to the price levels.
