A new book has been published this week on the history of the Golden Shears competition.

Shear History - 50 Years of Golden Shears in New Zealand covers the event which has become an integral part of sheep farming and wool production in New Zealand.

With 460 pages and 300 photographs, it contains an overview of the state of the sheep industry in each decade and developments on and off the farm, coupled with a description of each Golden Shears event.

Publisher Ian Grant from Fraser Books says the book started in the hands of shearing sports media liaison, Doug Laing.

But when the enormity of the task became apparent, he says several others were enlisted to contribute.

Ian Grant says there are more than 460 pages and 300 photographs in the book.
