Debrief wanted over handling of manhunt

Federated Farmers wants a debrief involving police, farmers and Fonterra following a two-day manhunt in southern Hawke's Bay which ended on Tuesday morning.

David Bourke, 46, of Wanganui was sought in connection with the discovery of a man's body in his car and the shooting of a farmworker on Sunday afternoon.

He was apprehended with a shotgun in a toilet block at the Norsewood Golf Club in Kopua Road at 10.40am on Tuesday.

Federated Farmers says the police were told on Sunday where he was, but failed to act.

Hawkes Bay dairy chairman David Hunt wants animal welfare to be considered when this sort of emergency occurs.

Mr Hunt was one of about 12 dairy farmers ordered out of a cordon area north of Norsewood on Sunday.

He says he was finally allowed back onto his farm on Monday evening and finished milking his cows and feeding his calves late that night.

Tankers were also shut out of the cordon and Fonterra was unable to collect any milk until Tuesday.

Mr Hunt says miscommunication among the police put his animals at risk.

It could be two weeks before milk production returns to normal.
